Smart Campus System (SCS)

  1.  Problem:

First and foremost, most lecturers facing difficulties in recognizing their students since there are students. Due to the fact that the lecturers only meet their students for 2 to 3 hours per week, it is difficult for lecturers to know every single student within a short period of time. Some lecturers tend to end up remember the most active ones or excellent students in class while forgetting a large portion of university students that didn’t pay attention during the lectures. When the lecturer is teaching in front of the class, they tend to do other things that is irrelevant to the subject. Since focusing to lectures is inevitably vital to gain full understanding to the concepts, these inactive students are more likely to get lower grades than those who focus in class. This situation can be considered as a serious problem since students with bad grades can affect the image of the university. This problem is caused by the learning and teaching process that is in “one direction” where the students are just passive listeners to the lecturer. Besides, the problem it happens too when the class is too big and in-class discussions can’t fully involve all the students.

Follow the flow of problem one, when lecturers couldn’t recognize their students, it’s hard to tell if there is any not active student who skips classes. Currently, the university attendance recording system has some major flaws. For universities which record attendance through signatures, there are possibility that students may copy the signature of the absentees. Another downside of attendance sheet in terms of usability is that the paper has finite space and may not be able to fit all the student names. Meanwhile, the user experience problem for this method is passing around the attendance sheet may cause distraction to the students who are trying to focus on the lecture. Besides, the attendance sheet also has high probability to be misplaced, defaced or ruined. As for universities who use QR code to record attendance, a usability issue arises when students are sending the QR code to the absentees so that they can copy their attendance and count as present when actually he is not. This unlawful act is hard to be detected especially when there is a large number of students in a section. While on the other hand, the user experience is affected when the students are having trouble while trying to scan the QR code. This happen when the students have phones with poor camera quality or the classroom have low light intensity.

Next, some lecturers prefer to assign their students to project groups by themselves. Since formation of project groups usually happen during the very beginning of a semester, students of a section are yet to recognize all their classmates. As a result, students tend to have difficulties finding the group members that are assigned to them by the lecturer. The students did not know much about each other’s personality and hobbies because they just knew each other. So everyone is more shy to communicate, you may not be able to communicate smoothly due to language or geographical reasons.

Lastly, during dinner time every dusk, the canteens at a university will usually be very crowded and noisy. Some food orders require the customers, which are students in this case to write down their name and wait for the food to be ready. Once the order is ready, the stall keeper will call upon the customer’s name so they will come to collect their order. However, the customers may not be able to hear the stall keeper due to the noisy surrounding at the canteen. In this case, the stall keeper can only wait since they don’t recognize their faces and the only way to find their customer is through the name. This causes inconvenience.

2. Objectives

The main objectives in designing Smart Campus System is to provide a series of service solution to the target users by facilitating user experience in all manner.Creating useful tools in “campus monitoring”

This technology will be helped in supervising students’ learning and behavior in class.

i. Record keeping

OurSmart Campus System provides a new way in recording attendances. The system will find a match of the detected faces in the database of students and automatically mark their attendance.

ii. Effective identification of unique faces in a crowd.

3D facial recognition – another type of user interface includes inSmart Campus System. It works even when they are busy backgrounds, change in lighting, motion blurring or any possibility of faces being hidden especially in the crowd.

3. Proposed solution with the given specific problem

Problem: Inactive student

Using this system, lecturers would be able to determine whether they were enjoying the lessons and whether they were paying attention. For instance, lecturers can use a face-recognition based mobile application (preferably on iPad Mini due to large display, lightweight and good camera) to scan and analyze students’ facial emotions. When it comes to education, such system is useful and described as “teaching assistant” as students dare not to wander their mind since the school has implemented iSmart Uni. Besides, the app will also scan and choose students with lower GPA to answer questions given during lectures. As a result, the inactive students will involve themselves into class activities more often.

  1. Problem: Vulnerable attendance recording method

By using the same app, the lecturers can take the attendance of their students by scanning the class. Through face recognition technology, only students who attend the class will have their attendance recorded into the database. As result, unlawful absentee will no longer have chance to fake and copy their attendance.

  1.  Problem: Students have problem finding the group members assigned to them by lecturer

Through camera face-recognition, the app will find a match of the detected face at the database. Then, the app will display the target’s name and other details. As a result, they can find the group member that assigned to them easily. After that, the newly met friends can also exchange their contact information through the app after they have accepted each other’s request. This can save the hassle of typing his or her phone number in order to save it.

  1. Problem: Canteen stall keeper tend to face difficulties notifying their customer about the order due to noisy surroundings.

The canteen stall keeper can now key in the matric ID or staff ID into the app so that the app can help the stall keeper to identify the students through face recognition. As a result, the canteen stall keeper will be able to handover the ordered food or beverages to the students if they failed to notify them.

  •  Scope of Proposed Application

Smart Campus System will be involved the interaction of hardware (ex: smartphone or tablet) and software (android/iOS application) to perform face recognition technology and to implement its function.
