2.0 Preferred design and justification
The application icon on the first interface design displays the letter “S” on the background, which is the abbreviation of Smart, to quickly confirm the user about what application it is, and the second interface design application icon ball type Shapes represent their integrity and information throughout the social circle, providing users with the fastest identification it is a fast communication and communication application. The application icon on the second interface design is preferred because it involves metaphors to cause faster recognition by the user.
The menu arrangement of first interface design is grouped in square presentation while the menu arrangement of second interface design is grouped in vertical column presentation. The menu arrangement of second interface design is preferred because it gives quick acknowledgement of functions to user. Besides that, icons for each function in second design has clearer metaphor when compared to first design.
The design of first interface shows mostly word-based instruction without an icon metaphor while design of second interface contains both those word-based instruction and also metaphor. The icon included is a good metaphor of the request sent instead of bunch of words, this allows quick recognition to user about what is going on now.
In finding suggested candidate module, the two design works differently. The first design find suggested candidate automatically and has an “Another candidate” button to find another candidate automatically. In another design which is second design, it allows user to choose a candidate in scroll mode, no need keep tap another candidate. User can just scroll down to select candidate and this give more control to user.
The instruction in the first design is vague, because it only tells the user to key in the person info without clearly stating the purpose of doing so. While the second design has stated the function “find person” clearly at the header of the screen and the instruction is also clear.
3.0 Metaphor
A list of icons used in the system :
“Smart Campus System”, a symbolic university icon is mainly designed for the target users in university such as lecturer, students and canteen store keeper.
- “Choose candidate” icon: Lecturers can choose their desired candidates from a bunch of students to get their personal academic details.
- Attendance of the students are verified and recorded via this icon.
- “Find People” icon serves function as searching people by entering their unique matrix ID.
- Identify people to whom they are not knowing each other.
- When someone sent out friend request to his/her friends, the request is accepted.
- Face is being scanned in process
- Return to home page
- Alert the users that there are notifications available in a specific area.
- Indicates that there is error occurring in the username or password entered.
- Red square shown proves someone’s face is being detected.
- Status bar is designated to indicate the presence of students in class. For example, a tick in status bar shows that student is attending the class, in contrast no tick shows that student is absence from class.
