  • Proposed Task

For the first task, the proposed system is to get students to involve actively in class. The proposed system will be used by lecturers and information of each students (name, character, activeness) will be generated with each scan.

For the second task, the proposed system is to collect the student attendance. The proposed system will be used by lecturers to scan across the class of students face to make sure no fake attendance happen.

For the third task, the proposed system is to find and identify target person. The proposed system will be used by lecturer, student and canteen stall keeper. By using the proposed system, the users can scan the crowds to retrieve their information.

User Group 1- Lecturer

Doc. ZHANG is a 54 years old lecturer who teach the “Human Computing Interaction” subject in UTM. She is very passionate to her job and  constantly find new ways that can explain the concepts more effectively by having interactive activities such as Q&A session, in-class debates, giving examples through animations and pop quizzes. In her class, there are several students that participate in her activities actively and score high grades in tests and assignments. This have made her feel very happy as her efforts paid off. Unfortunately, there is still a large group of inactive students who think that “Human Computing Interaction” is a trouble subject and do other things at the back while she is delivering her lectures in front. These inactive students tend to have low grades.

It is challenging for her to recognize and memorize all the students’ face with their names as she has to teach many classes per semester, each class consists of over 40 students. She only managed to remember the active students who interacts the most with her in class. She hopes there are some tools which can help her to analyze the students more deeply in term of the students’ performance in class, their personality along with their names. It is difficult for her to understand whether each student likes this course and how much they understand the course.

Besides, some of the students like to skip her class with fake attendance by asking their friends to take attendance for them. She didn’t realize because she can’t remember all the faces of her students. There is one student who fail in this subject, DING who didn’t even show up in her class from the very beginning of the semester but still managed to sit in the final exam which originally required student to have at least 80% of attendance by asking his friend to take his attendance every class. She felt guilty for not realizing those inactive students and students who skipped classes with fake attendance. She hopes there is a more effective and accurate way in collecting attendance.

After the test, many test papers need to be judged, but the students’ writing is very unclear. She hopes to make the system through certain techniques. Can automatically correct the assignment. She hopes that there will be a new technology and method to help her solve the problem of correcting assignments, thus reducing the workload of students and teachers.

User Group 2- Student

DING is a 20 years old undergraduate who is currently pursuing his degree in Software Engineering at UTM. One interesting fact about DING is he often has a weird feeling that comes with failing to recognize every single person he knows in his life. He tends to forget people’s faces easily even though he just met them a few minutes ago. Since he is very poor at recognizing faces, he always tries to avoid awkward situations like large meetings or parties where facial recognition skills are important. Whenever he meets new group of people in new environment (starting university), it takes him a while to ‘remember’ who is who. To him, a face may seem familiar; or sometimes it feels like a total stranger which he never met before.  In university, when someone waves or greets him with a smile, he more often than not knowing them. Hence he was thought to be stand-offish but in fact he is horribly bad with people’ faces. As a result, while being assigned by lecturers to form groups, he felt very tense as he is unable to keep track of classmates’ identities.

Besides, he also finds that the attendance sheet is distracting him from taking notes while listening to the lecture. This is because, he needs to stop writing in order to sign the attendance sheet and pass it to the students who sit in front of him.

DING is a person who is very interested in feedbacks for his presentations, however he is frustrated when nobody is willing to volunteer themselves to give feedbacks about the presentation. DING have no choice besides asking his roommate who is also his classmate to give a feedback.

All in all, DING hopes that there are some ways that can help him to overcome “face blindness problem” which troubled him all the time and a more efficient alternative in taking attendance.

User Group 3- Canteen Stall keeper

John is 40 years old and he is the owner of canteen, UTM.  Due to its popularity, there is always a massive amount of orders flood in all at once during peak hour. The food orders require the customers, who are mostly UTM students to write down their names and the food with specific requirement if any such as nasi goreng with extra egg. After the food is ready, they will call upon the customer’s name so they will come to collect their order. However, this approach contains several flaws.

First and foremost, some of the Malaysians’ names are too common, such as Ali, Ah Kao and Muthu. Some of the customers have the same name and there is no way to differentiate them. It’s more confusing when their order is similar but with specific requirement such as fried rice with no onion, the tarik with less ice etc. If any customer accidentally collects the wrong order, they wouldn’t realize that instantly as they only know their name but not their face. They couldn’t help but make a new one and leaving the wrong order food to be dumped and wasted. Moreover, John hires a Pakistan worker, Tony to take and deliver the orders. Tony has to call upon the customer’s name so they will come to collect their order.

However, his pronunciation of the local people name with a strong accent is hard to recognized by the local customers. Furthermore, the environment is too noisy when it’s crowded especially during peak hour. The students in the canteens can barely hear the voice of Tony calling out their names. In this case, the stall keeper can only wait since they don’t recognize their faces and the only way to find their customer is through the name. This causes inconvenience to John and their customers. John felt frustrated when his café received complaints and bad ratings due to the flaws of the current ordering approach. He hopes that he can take the orders not only with names but also with their faces and have a more effective way to inform their customer to collect their order when their order is ready.

  • Scenario

Scenario-Teacher

It’s Sunday evening and Doc ZHANG enter BK4 and start her class like usual. After delivered the lectures on the topics that need to be covered for that week, she decided to ask a few questions that is related to what she taught just now. Immediately after she call for volunteers to answer the first question, an active students gave her a very relevant and detailed answer. Doc ZHANG is very delighted to hear that answer and decided to ask another question. However, there is no volunteers who is willing to answer this question. Without wasting too much time, she just call out the student name that came first to her mind. Coincidentally, she accidentally call out the name of the active students who just successfully  answered the first question. The active students answered the question while the rest of the students are sitting inactively in the back.

Scenario-Student

On any regular day, DING will reach the classroom 10 to 15 minutes earlier. When the lecturer comes into the class, the first thing that the lecturer will do is login into the staff portal and generate an attendance QR code for the students to scan on it as a proof of attendance.

As for DING, he login into the UTM Smart application from the phone. Then by tapping the Scan QR option from the interface will allow the camera to turn  on. From the camera, DING need to aim on the generated QR code for few seconds till a “beep” sound is heard and an e-receipt will be generated in the phone as a proof that attendance is recorded. In some classes, the lecturer will prefer the usage of traditional attendance sheet, DING feel distracted when he have to sign and pass the attendance sheet to the students who sit in front of him while he is trying to take notes while listening to the lecture.

Scenario- Canteen Stall keeper

It’s another dusk in UTM, the canteen is full of students dining in the canteen. As usual, John food store is crowded with students queuing to order the food. Students write their order and name in a piece of paper and pass it to John. After receiving the order, John pass the order receipt to the cooker to cook. After the food is prepared, his worker will start calling out the name while pressing the table bell continuously.

However, no one come to take the food and it frustrates John as the crowd noise is too loud and, in the end, John went to find the student himself from table to table and pass the food to the student. This affects John business as the store is short-handed due to the absence of his worker, Tony.
